Renault Clio Stop Start Not Available

The Renault Clio stop start system helps to reduce fuel consumption and lowers exhaust gas emissions. The system is activated automatically each time the engine is started. When coming to a standstill in your vehicle, the engine automatically stops and restarts when you move off.

Many expect the stop start system to work at all times without issue. However, there are certain conditions that must be met in order for the system to operate as expected. Though your Renault Clio stop start system may not be working due to a fault, it’s more likely that one or more conditions have failed to be met resulting in the message ‘Auto Stop Unavailable’ displayed on the dashboard. To enable engine stop:

Automatic Gearbox

Versions of Renault Clio with automatic gearbox:

  • The gear select lever is in position D, M or N;
  • The brake pedal is depressed sufficiently hard;
    • If you wish to inhibit engine stop due to being ready to move off at a busy junction for example, avoid pressing the brake too hard.
  • The accelerator pedal must not be depressed;
  • Your vehicle must have reached a speed of 0 mph for around 1 second.

Providing the above applies, engine stop occurs and the green auto stop warning light illuminates in the dashboard if gear lever position P is selected, or if position N is selected with the handbrake engaged and the brake pedal released.

Manual Gearbox

Versions of Renault Clio with manual gearbox:

  • The gear lever is in neutral;
  • The clutch pedal is fully released. (If the auto stop warning light flashes Auto Stop it indicates that the clutch has not been sufficiently released);
    • If you wish to inhibit engine stop due to being ready to move off at a busy junction for example, keep the clutch fully pressed down.
  • The vehicle speed is less than approximately 7 mph (3 km/h).

Renault Clio Stop Start Not Available

When your Renault Clio stop start is is not working, you may (depending on your vehicle) receive the message ‘Auto Stop Unavailable’, and/or a warning light indicating the system is unavailable. These are the conditions that prevent engine stop:

  • Battery temperature too cold (below -5 °C) or too hot (above 60 °C);
  • The temperature of the vehicle interior and the climate control setting is too high;
  • Stopping on a gradient with automatic transmission that is steeper than around 12%;
