Explained in this guide are many of the dashboard warning lights and symbols contained in many versions of the popular Renault Clio along with their meanings.
Each light symbol contains a picture of what it looks like on a Clio dashboard and an explanation of the fault or service it is indicating.
Although many dashboard lights and engine warning symbols are found in this list, the exact lights and symbols may vary depending of which features your Clio has and from which country. The colour in which the dashboard warning light illuminates details the severity of the issues.
Red will usually suggest an urgent warning that requires immediate attention. Orange warning lights indicate a less urgent issue like a service is due for example. Other colours such as green and blue provide the driver with information. Flashing lights will often inform the driver of an urgent problem.
Toxic fume warning light
The toxic fume filter warning lights (looks like a tap to some) illuminates when the ignition is activated and extinguishes shortly after. If the light remains on continuously, consult an authorised technician. If the light flashes, reduce the engine speed until light stops flashing and seek assistance from an approved technician.
Battery charge warning
When the ignition is switched on, battery charge warning light will illuminate and extinguish a few seconds later. If the warning light illuminates whilst driving, accompanied by a STOP warning message and a audible beep, this indicates an overload in the electrical circuits. Stop when safe to do so and seek help from an approved technician.
STOP warning light
The stop warning light illuminates initially with the ignition and extinguishes once the engine has started. The light illuminate alongside other warnings and messages and is accompanied by an audible sound. If the warning light illuminates, stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so and contact a vehicle technician.
Dashboard warning light
Upon turning on the ignition on the Renault Clio, the spanner warning light will illuminate and extinguish as soon as the engine has started. The warning light may illuminate alongside other indicator lights and messages on the dashboard. If the warning light remains illuminated whilst driving, drive carefully and consult an approved vehicle technician as soon as possible.
Traction control light
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and traction control warning light illuminates with the ignition being turned on and extinguishes after a few seconds. If the ESP light and warning light illuminate, the ESP and traction control are deactivated. This may result in the vehicle being harder to control. Seek an approved vehicle technician for help.
Air bag warning light
The air bag warning light illuminate for a few seconds as the ignition is activated and then extinguishes. If the light fails to illuminate when turning on the ignition, or it comes on whilst driving, this indicates a failure with one or more of the air bag systems. Anti-lock brake warning
Anti-lock brake system (ABS) lights up for a moment as the ignition is turned on and then goes out. If it ABS light illuminates whilst driving, it indicates a problem with the ABS system. Oil pressure warning light
Lights up initially with ignition and extinguishes after a moment. If the oil pressure warning light illuminates whilst driving, accompanied by the STOP warning light and an audible beep, it’s important to stop the vehicle and turn the engine off. Engine coolant light
The engine coolant temperature warning light illuminates for a few seconds as the Clio ignition is turned on and then goes out. If light flashes, it indicates a problem with the injection system. Stop as soon as safely possible and contact approved Renault dealer. If the light is steady, allow the engine to idle to cool down. Handbrake / brake light
This circle containing an exclamation mark symbol illuminates when the ignition it switched on and goes out when the handbrake is released. The handbrake on and brake circuit incident warning light illuminates and is accompanied by the STOP warning light and an audible beep to inform the driver brake fluid levels are low or there is an issue within the braking system. Stop as soon as safe to do so and contact an approved Renault technician.
Gear change warning
To aid in better fuel economy, the Renault Clio gear change warning light illuminates to advice to change to a higher gear (up arrow), or to aid in better engine control, to change to a lower gear (down arrow).
Engine immobiliser light
The engine immobiliser system warning light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on and extinguish a few moments later. If the light remains on or flashes after attempting to start the engine, this indicates a fault with the system. Use the second key or card provided with the vehicle. If this does not resolve the issue, contact an authorised Renault technician.
Power steering symbol
The variable power assisted steering dashboard symbol illuminates with the ignition activated and goes out a few seconds later. If the warning light illuminates whilst driving, it indicates a fault in the system. Contact an authorised Renault vehicle technician.
Electronic fault warning
Warning light initially illuminates with ignition and extinguishes a few moments later. A fault with the injection computer or automatic transmission when light illuminates whilst driving. Consult authorised Renault technician.
Water in diesel filter light
Light illuminates when ignition is turned on and goes out a few seconds later. IF the light comes on whilst driving, it indicates there is water in the diesel. Contact should be made with an authorised Renault vehicle technician as soon as possible.
Serious injection fault
Lights up initially with ignition but should go out when engine starts. If light illuminates whilst driving stop immediately when safe to do so and contact an authorised Renault vehicle technician.
Diesel particle filter
If light illuminates, it indicates a filter saturation risk. To clean the particle filter, drive at an average speed of at least 24 mph (40 km/h), until the warning light goes out. You may need to restart the operation if the vehicle has to stop before the warning light goes out. Cleaning should take around 20 minutes. Speed limiter light
The speed limiter helps you stay within a particular speed limit of your choice. This is of benefit when driving in areas where you would like to keep to a specific speed limit.
Engine Stop and Start System
The Renault Clio automatic engine stop and start system helps to reduce fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions. Stop and start is activated automatically when the vehicle is started, but can be manually switched off. When your vehicle comes to a standstill, the system stops the engine (standby) and automatically restarts when you move off.
